CHARTER DAY

Free admission to the Pennsylvania Military Museum, Boalsburg, Centre County and other select Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites on this date to commemorate the granting of the Charter from Charles II to William Penn which founded “Penn’s Woods” in 1681. SAINT PATRICK'S WORLD

March 14, 2010: 1:30pm - 3pm
Presented by Clem McIntyre, Riverlands naturalist. Everybody’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. But there is much more behind the day than leprechauns and green beer. The story of the man who would become St. Patrick is one of kidnapping and slavery, daring escapes, Imperial Rome, the early Christian church and the last remnants of a mysterious civilization that once spanned most of Europe. Add to that the fact that Patrick may just have had a hand in saving western civilization, and you get a sense of why his life has been celebrated though the centuries. In addition to St. Patrick, this program will touch on the nature, history and culture of Ireland. It’s a nice way to welcome the holiday.

MAPLE SUGARING OPEN HOUSE

March 20, 2010: Noon - 4pm
Programs begin on the hour (noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m.) in our Environmental Education Center with a talk and film featuring the natural and cultural history of making maple sugar. Afterward, a short walk through Goose Woods takes you to the Sugar Shack to experience the sights, sounds and scents of maple sugaring. Join us for this family experience and follow the sugaring process from sap to syrup. Scouts, 4-H and other groups are welcome to attend either day. Plan to arrive on the hour at the Environmental Education Center auditorium to enjoy the entire sugaring program. Outdoor demonstrations end at 4 p.m. Maple products will be available for purchase at the sugar shack. For your comfort, we suggest you dress for the weather and a short walk outdoors.

MARCH INTO SPRING

Presented by Clem McIntyre, Riverlands naturalist. Welcome spring with a walk through the wetlands to look for signs of the natural world awakening from the long winter doldrums. Migrating birds and mating amphibians are just some of the many busy creatures we may catch a glimpse of. We might also spot some of the first wildflowers to peek out from the chilly soil. We will meet in the wetlands parking lot to begin our hike. Spring weather can be very unpredictable, so be sure to dress appropriately. Waterproof footwear is strongly recommended.

TIMBERDOODLE TIME

March 26, 2010: 7pm - 8:30pm
It is dance time and you are invited to come and watch. This dance is unlike any you have experienced before. It is the unique courtship ritual of the timberdoodle (a.k.a. the American Woodcock). An indoor talk will focus on the natural history and behavior of this unusual bird. Afterward, we will go outdoors to watch and hear the ancient song and dance of the "timberdoodle." Dress for the weather and be prepared to spend some time outdoors.

THE GEORGIA GUITAR QUARTET

March 27, 2010
Borrowing from the past and present, they draw inspiration from the music that has influenced them — classical masters such as Bach and Brahms, experimentalists in the vein of Cage, Bartók and Stockhausen and contemporary rock icons like Radiohead and Led Zeppelin — while incorporating their own compositions into their dynamic concert program. The quartet, formed in 1996, has been featured on American Public Media's "Performance Today" and has released four critically acclaimed recordings, including the most recent, "Puzzle," a collection of their own compositions.
